Iris' First Camping Trip

Saturday, Iris got to go on her first camping trip when she joined us for an overnight in Line. Not every kid can say they slept on the front lawn of their elementary school (but a whole bunch of future Fairview kids can)! It was a strange first camping trip, but it was a fun one.

Iris spent a some time playing with a bunch of kids in this tent where she told everyone her mom was 88 years old.

On the way there, Iris and I had this conversation:
Iris: When you dream about doing something, and then you actually get to do it, that's when dreams come true.
Me: So what have you been dreaming about?
Iris: Sleeping in a tent!
Me: Well, you get to sleep in a tent tonight.
Iris: I know! It's my dream come true!
(She was more than a little excited)

Timm and I have gotten to be pretty good friends with another couple, Jen and Mat. They were also bringing their daughter, Marley, to camp on Saturday. We were a bit nervous that the kids might not hit it off, but they got along swimmingly. The two girls literally played quietly in my tent for hours, taking turns playing games on my iPod. Iris ran around the lawn with Mac's two girls, and played on the playground with Cristy's two boys. She "roasted" marshmallows (which, for Iris, meant putting a marshmallow on a stick and holding it near the fire for about 2 seconds. "Perfect!" she would exclaim), and I painted her fingernails. She wore herself out completely and slept soundly, warm and cozy snuggled between me and Timm. The next morning, she didn't want to go home.

Marley and Iris, fast friends.

Several weeks ago, when we took a tour of Fairview with Iris, I'm pretty sure she was unhappy about the idea of going to a new school. She's been at the same preschool, with the same teacher, for 2 years and she really enjoys it. She didn't know why Mommy and Daddy would be working so hard to get her to go to a different school! After camping with us and getting to make new friends, I think she's a lot more excited about starting at a new school next year.
