To be clear, I'm not paid for writing this review. I just like my opinion to be known about absolutely everything.
I am not brand loyal in the slightest when it comes to buying diapers. I decide what brand to buy based upon what is cheapest, what is on sale, and what I have a coupon for. Also factored in are my personal experiences with the diaper brand.*
This week, I was able to get Huggies new Slip-On Diapers for $3.97 (sale price $8.97 at Meijer, and stacked mPerks coupon for $2/1 and manufacturer coupon for $3/1) so I thought I'd give them a try.
However I was skeptical from the get-go.
I figured these were just like extra-absorbent pull-ups (which they are) and my main complaint with pull-ups is that you can't "close" them when they are dirty. There are no velcro or sticky tabs to roll them up and seal the poo in when you put it in the trash and there is a very real chance of smearing poo all over the garbage can.
So I was happy to see that Huggies thought of this problem and along with tear-away sides (for easy removal, as advertised) there are small velcro tabs to seal up the yuck.
Score one for the slip-on.
Also, another score for the slip-on, we haven't had any leakage problems (after using one in the evening, one overnight, and one this morning).
And that's basically where the good stuff ends.
Maybe I've just gotten really good at slapping a diaper onto a busy child, but it took longer to slide this diaper up my son's very busy (and not so balanced) legs than it would have just to lay him down with an ordinary diaper. The tear-away sides are a little too easy to tear away and they started to come apart while trying to wriggle my son in to the slip-on. Also, with boys, to ensure there are no leakage problems, there is the issue of... aim. It's kind of an important step to make sure the penis isn't pointing up (and pee going right out of the diaper). This is a quick, almost unnoticeable adjustment with a regular diaper. Not so much with the slip-on. Also, putting on the slip-on for bedtime, right after bath when his legs were still a little damp, was way more difficult than a regular diaper and very frustrating. I am actually surprised we didn't have any leakage issues.
(Another foreseeable problem with the slip-ons: diaper rash cream. My children have both always had very sensitive bums and get rash very easily, so Butt Paste has been our best friend. It would be impossible to use any creams with the slip-on!!)
My opinion: go ahead and get them if you can get them on the cheap, because they do their job well (once you actually manage to get them on!). Otherwise, stick with an ordinary diaper, no matter how busy or squirmy your child!!
*For anyone interested on my opinions about other diapers (name brands, store brands and cloth), read this other post so I don't feel like I wasted my time writing it.
