My external hard drive crashed a few months ago. Or was mysteriously damaged. Regardless, it wasn't working. And I stored EVERYTHING on it: every photo I have taken for the past 7 or so years, my wedding photos, my work from school (both written and visual), Iris' baby videos, my katyC work, things I can't think of right now.
Everything.
(oh, and stupid me... I've reminded people for YEARS working at the camera store how important it is to back up your work. Der- I thought I WAS backing up my work... I just forgot to keep another copy someplace else. Stupid me...)
And I got the news today that it was unable to be repaired. There is only one remaining possibility to try to get the data off of it, which is to send it to some lab in Columbus where people in a vacuum-sealed room and haz-mat suits can open it up in a dust free environment and disassemble and do who-knows-what to try to retrieve my stuff. My memories. My art. My work.
For a price.
I was told it usually runs somewhere around $500.
I do have that much money. But I also need to replace my car. And feed my family. And pay rent. And pay utilities.
So, technically speaking, I guess I don't really have the money.
Unless I find a five hundred dollar bill in the couch cushions.
Pretty much every extra penny I can scrape up, every photo shoot I have, all extra income has been going into the car fund. Can I afford to put that on hold so I can save up for this repair?
What if I don't get it fixed? Can I live without the stuff that's on there?
How much is all of that worth? What would you pay? How much would be too much for your stuff?

ReplyDeleteI have your wedding photos backed up if you want them! I know that's not much of a dent BUT I'm just letting you know I still have them if you want them!
If I were you, I would set it aside and save for a few months. Does that sound lame? Will the files deteriorate over time? If not I'd say just save up. If so, than maybe it's worth it to eat rice and beans for a few weeks.
I'm soooooo sorry Kate!!!!
