Blueberry Poop

I have decided to keep Asher away from blueberries for a while.

Normally his breakfast consists of organic vanilla yogurt mixed with a handful of fresh blueberries followed by a piece of toast or whole grain waffle (or whatever he can swipe from Iris).  Every day he eats the blueberries.  And they are good for him!  Not to knock blueberries or anything- they are healthy and delicious.

But they do mysterious things to his poo.

Most, if not all, mothers have a disgustingly close relationship with their child's bowel movements.  It is sort of a love/hate obsession- either it's worry that there's not enough of it, or there's too much of it, the color, the consistency, the chunks, the smell, the blowouts, the time of day.  Honestly, I was skeptical of this before becoming a mother myself.  I would read stories in magazines about how new mothers' conversations (or blog entries...) can center around poo- yeah, right!  But it is a phenomenon that happens even before a new mom leaves the hospital with her new little bundle, the Baby BM center of the brain is accessed for the first time.  I blame meconium.  Talk about a shocker of a first diaper-change...
So, suffice to say, moms in general are very well acquainted with their kids' poo.   Cloth diapering moms specifically, I have grown to discover, have a much more intimate relationship with the waste.  It's not just about wadding it up and throwing it out; it's scraping it out and rinsing it off and washing it out and stain removal and upkeep.  None of this is very difficult, mind you.  But cleaning out a cloth diaper is somewhat of an art form.  To keep it looking like new and smelling fresh- it gives a mom a real sense of accomplishment!  (I know it's not just me... I've read other blogging CDing mommas who take real pride and joy in a load of clean diapers LOL).

Which brings me back to the blueberries.

I was scraping out a particularly nasty one- it seriously looked pitch black and only slightly less sticky than the meconium I previously mentioned.  I noticed whole blueberries were still present and accounted for, floating around in the toilet.  Then, as I was rinsing off the remaining solid matter, I noticed that the staining on the white diaper was not black.  It was blue.  Bright, vibrant, royal blue.  It looked like, instead of being pooped on, it was tie-dyed.  I have yet to see if that stain will come completely out...

So, yeah, no more blueberries for a while.
