I literally spent 4 days preparing for today's grocery shopping trip, and yet I still managed to go over-budget. I studied ads, I matched sales with coupons, I stacked manufacturer coupons with store coupons, I made a meal plan for the next two weeks based on what was on sale. I did everything I was supposed to do, yet still managed to go over by exactly $13 (though I had budgeted $120 for groceries, I had really hoped to make it around $100, so I had gone over my personal challenge by $33. Bleh). To make it even worse, I didn't even buy everything I know I'll need for the next 2 weeks (I only bought one week's worth of lunches for Timm to take to work because there isn't enough room in our freezer for any more than that), so I know I am going to be going over even more!
I think I am becoming way too emotionally involved with couponing, because I feel so very disappointed in myself. I was so frustrated when I got home, I didn't bother photographing what I bought. One thing that makes me feel a bit better was that I also bought toiletries, not just food items. Should those not be included in the grocery budget?? Meh, if I buy it at the grocery store, it comes out of grocery money.
So, here's the damage:
retail: $206.07
paid: $133
total saved: $73.07
Ok, so seeing it in writing, I feel a bit better. I may have spent more than I wanted, but my savings is consistent with the past few weeks. That's something, at least. And I did buy a bunch of stuff. A Bunch. We will not be eating out for a looooong while.
That's all for now.
I feel like the value of couponing comes when you're able to start stockpiling. For me it's dry goods as not tons fits into my freezer either. I used to take the frozen meals to work as well and one thing that helped is that I'm not brand loyal (ie Lean Cuisine). I feel like 1 brand is on sale each week. So that might help. Now I just take leftovers from the night before...the joys of cooking for one ;-)
ReplyDeleteI also try to plan my meals around what's on sale and/or matches with a coupon....
You are on the path and that is what REALLY counts!
