Bike Days

New bikes for everyone! Or, at least, new bikes for the kids. (I'm considering the idea of getting bikes for the whole family, but I am also considering that all four of us would never be able to be on a bicycle at the same time without serious injury.)

I didn't get a photo of Iris by herself on her new bike. I am pretty sure it is still slightly too small for her, but she's comfortable on it and there was no salesperson around at Toys R Them to ask. We were trading in her old bike and this was the cheapest upgrade AND it was the bike she liked! Done and done.

I am really excited about Asher's new balance bike.

It's teeny tiny (yet somehow a bit too big for him?) and doesn't have pedals. Kids just scoot along on it and not have to worry about mastering the pedaling action. I was sure he'd take to it pretty quickly.

So today we took the kids to the park to try out their new rides.

Safety first. Even in the car.
 Shortest bike ride ever.

I am really glad Timm had taken the day off, because I would have lost my marbles if I was by myself! I seriously underestimated the amount of effort it would take to help Asher learn to use his balance bike (though I am sure after a few months of learning, he'll get the hang of riding it and we will never see him again). His feet don't quite reach when he's sitting on the seat and he definitely has no sense of balance at this point! I pulled something in my back hunching over his teensy bicycle to help him along.

And then, inexplicably, the chain fell off of Iris' brand new bike. Wha?? First ride on the new bike and less than 5 minutes into it, the thing is unusable. I felt so bad for her. But thankfully it didn't get her down. And after being at the park all of about ten minutes, we packed up and headed home to fix the chain.

The kids still had great fun. And we got ice cream at the local soft serve place. It was a fantastic summer day (in mid March).
